Roofing Warranties Compared: GAF vs Owens Corning vs CertainTeed
Every roofing bid you get will say "lifetime warranty" somewhere on it. Almost none of them mean the same thing, and the words that matter are never the ones printed in the largest font. This is the whole landscape in one place: what each tier from GAF, Owens Corning, and CertainTeed actually pays, which contractor credential unlocks it, and the five things none of them cover. That last part is where Minnesota homeowners get surprised.
Key Takeaways
- The number that matters is the non-prorated period, not the word "lifetime."
- No manufacturer warranty covers hail. Storm damage is an insurance matter.
- Workmanship coverage is worth more than material coverage, because installation error causes most roof failures.
- Enhanced warranties require a credentialed contractor and a complete single-manufacturer system.
- Transfers are usually one time only, with a deadline measured in weeks after the sale.
The Three Words That Decide Everything
Material vs Workmanship
A material warranty covers a defect in the shingle: it cracks, sheds granules early, or fails in a way the manufacturer caused. A workmanship warranty covers installation error: nails driven in the wrong place, flashing done wrong, starter strip missing.
Here is the uncomfortable industry truth. Genuine shingle defects are rare. Installation error is common. So the material warranty is the one everybody advertises and the workmanship warranty is the one that actually protects you. Standard warranties from every manufacturer cover material only.
Prorated vs Non-Prorated
The non-prorated period is the window where the manufacturer pays full freight, including labor on the better tiers. After it ends, coverage prorates: the payout shrinks every year with the roof's age, and often shrinks to material cost only.
A standard warranty gives you 10 years non-prorated. A top-tier warranty gives you 50. Same shingle, same "lifetime" label on the wrapper. That gap is the entire product.
Credential
Manufacturers only allow their enhanced warranties to be registered by contractors who have earned a credential from them, which generally requires licensing, insurance, tenure, and a clean claim history. The credential tiers are, roughly:
- GAF: Certified, then Master Elite
- Owens Corning: Preferred, then Platinum Preferred
- CertainTeed: Credentialed, then ShingleMaster, then the top ShingleMaster tier
Ask any contractor which credential they hold, at which manufacturer, and therefore which warranty they can actually register on your roof. A contractor can install a beautiful GAF roof and still be unable to give you a GAF workmanship warranty.
The Full Comparison
Terms below are summarized from each manufacturer's published warranty documents as of 2026. Coverage details change and every warranty has exclusions, so read the certificate you are actually issued.
GAF
| Tier | Material | Workmanship | Tear-off & disposal | Credential required |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shingle & Accessory Limited Warranty (standard) |
Lifetime, 10 yr non-prorated | None | Not covered | None. Any contractor. |
| System Plus | Lifetime, 50 yr non-prorated | None | Covered on defect claims | GAF Certified or Master Elite, full GAF system |
| Silver Pledge | Lifetime, 50 yr non-prorated | 10 years | Covered | GAF Certified or Master Elite, full GAF system |
| Golden Pledge | Lifetime, 50 yr non-prorated | 25 years | Covered | Master Elite only, plus a factory inspection of the finished roof |
We go deep on this one in the GAF Golden Pledge breakdown, including what the factory inspection actually checks.
Owens Corning
| Tier | Material | Workmanship | Tear-off & disposal | Credential required |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard limited warranty | Limited lifetime, 10 yr non-prorated | None | Not covered | None. Any contractor. |
| Preferred Protection | Limited lifetime, extended non-prorated | 10 years | Covered, including labor | OC Preferred contractor, full OC system |
| Platinum Protection | 50 yr non-prorated | 25 years | Covered, including labor | OC Platinum Preferred contractor, full OC system |
Owens Corning's transfer rule is the strictest of the three worth knowing about: Platinum Protection transfers one time only, within 60 days of the home sale, and the workmanship portion generally ends at transfer. If you are buying a house with a Platinum roof, handle the transfer paperwork at closing.
CertainTeed
| Tier | Material | Workmanship | Credential required |
|---|---|---|---|
| SureStart (standard) |
Lifetime limited, 10 yr SureStart non-prorated | None | None. Any contractor. |
| SureStart PLUS 3-Star | 20 yr non-prorated, 100% material and labor | None | Credentialed ShingleMaster, full Integrity Roof System |
| SureStart PLUS 4-Star | 50 yr non-prorated, 100% material and labor | 25 years | Credentialed ShingleMaster, full Integrity Roof System |
| SureStart PLUS 5-Star | 50 yr non-prorated, 100% material and labor | 25 years, broadest terms | Top ShingleMaster tier only |
Head to Head at the Top Tier
| GAF Golden Pledge | OC Platinum Protection | CertainTeed 5-Star | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Non-prorated material | 50 years | 50 years | 50 years |
| Workmanship | 25 years | 25 years | 25 years |
| Tear-off on a claim | Covered | Covered | Covered |
| Factory inspection | Yes, required | No | No |
| Transfer | One time, deadline applies | One time, 60 days, workmanship generally ends | One time, deadline applies |
At the top of each ladder the three are close enough that the warranty should not decide your shingle. What decides it is which credential your contractor actually holds, because that determines which of these you can get at all.
What None of Them Cover
This is the section I wish every homeowner read before a storm, not after.
1. Hail. Full Stop.
Every one of these warranties excludes hail, wind above the shingle's rated speed, falling objects, and other acts of nature. In a state that gets hit the way Minnesota does, that is a significant carve-out and it surprises people every single June.
Hail is an insurance question. It goes through your homeowner policy, not through GAF. A Class 4 impact-resistant shingle may earn you a premium discount from your carrier and will hold up better against small stones, but it does not create warranty coverage for hail. We cover the claim side in the Minnesota roof insurance claim guide and in our Class 4 review.
2. Ice Dam Damage
Water backing up under shingles because of an ice dam is not a shingle defect and is not workmanship, unless the installer skipped required ice and water shield. Ventilation and insulation drive ice dams, and they are largely outside the roofing warranty. See our ice dam guide.
3. Failures Caused by Poor Ventilation
Every one of these warranties requires the attic to be ventilated to code. If the attic cooks, the shingles fail early, and the manufacturer will point at the ventilation. This is a real denial reason, not a theoretical one, and it is why a good contractor talks about your soffits before your shingle color.
4. Anything on a Roof That Was Not a Complete System
Enhanced warranties require the manufacturer's own underlayment, starter strip, ridge cap, and ventilation, all installed together. Mixing a GAF shingle with a generic starter strip disqualifies the enhanced tier. It is also why an overlay generally cannot get you an enhanced warranty.
5. Your Contractor Going Out of Business
This one cuts both ways and is the strongest argument for a manufacturer workmanship warranty. A contractor's own workmanship guarantee is worth exactly as much as the contractor's continued existence. Storm-chasing outfits routinely leave the state after a season. A manufacturer-backed workmanship warranty is honored by the manufacturer regardless of what happens to the installer, which in a hail market is worth real money.
A warranty is not a promise that nothing will go wrong. It is a document describing exactly who pays when it does, and for how long. Read it that way.
Our Honest Disclosure
Northern Forge Construction is a GAF Certified contractor at the Silver Pledge tier. We are not GAF Master Elite, so we cannot register a Golden Pledge warranty directly. On HOA and townhome projects that specify Golden Pledge, we partner with a Master Elite firm who validates the warranty while we run the project, and we say so up front.
On Owens Corning and CertainTeed roofs we install to manufacturer specification and register the standard limited warranty. We are not an Owens Corning Platinum Preferred company. Before you sign anything, we will tell you in writing exactly which warranty tier is available on your specific job and which is not.
I would rather lose a job over this than have you find out at claim time. If the warranty tier you want requires a credential we do not hold, I will tell you that on the first visit and point you at someone who does.
How to Compare Warranties Across Three Bids
Ask each contractor these five questions
- "Which warranty tier will be registered on my roof, by name?" Not "lifetime." The actual product name: Silver Pledge, Platinum Protection, SureStart PLUS 4-Star.
- "What credential do you hold that allows it?" Then verify it on the manufacturer's contractor locator, which is public.
- "How many years is the non-prorated period, and how many years of workmanship?" These two numbers let you compare any two bids honestly.
- "Is the full system from one manufacturer?" Underlayment, starter, ridge cap, ventilation. Mixing brands can quietly disqualify the tier.
- "Who registers the warranty and when do I get the certificate?" The contractor registers it after completion. If you never receive a certificate with your name and address on it, you may not have the warranty you paid for. Ask for it, and file it with your closing documents.
Is the Upgrade Worth Paying For?
Usually yes, and less than people expect. Moving from a standard warranty to a credentialed enhanced warranty is mostly about the system components and the registration, not a large material cost. On a typical Twin Cities roof it is often a few hundred dollars of difference, and it converts 10 years of material-only coverage into decades of coverage that includes labor.
Where I would not spend the money: chasing the very top tier if you plan to sell within a few years, since workmanship coverage frequently ends at transfer anyway. Where I absolutely would: a forever home, a steep or complex roof where labor to fix anything is expensive, or any job where you are not certain the contractor will still be around in a decade.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the warranty follow the shingle or the contractor?
Both, and that is the trick. The material coverage comes from the manufacturer regardless. The enhanced tiers only exist if a credentialed contractor installed a complete system and registered it. Same shingle, two different contractors, two very different warranties.
What is the difference between a manufacturer workmanship warranty and a contractor's own guarantee?
A contractor guarantee is a promise from that company, backed by that company. If they close, it evaporates. A manufacturer workmanship warranty is backed by GAF, Owens Corning, or CertainTeed and survives the contractor. Both are useful. Only one survives a bankruptcy.
How do I file a warranty claim?
Contact the manufacturer directly using the certificate number, and notify your installing contractor at the same time. You will need the original certificate, proof of purchase, and photos. Do not have anyone repair the area before the manufacturer inspects it, because that can void the claim.
My roof is 15 years old. Do I still have coverage?
Probably, in prorated form, if the shingles were rated lifetime. Whether it is worth pursuing depends on the prorated math, which after 15 years often covers a modest share of material only and no labor. Find your certificate before you assume either way.
Do algae streaks fall under warranty?
Only if the shingle carried a specific algae resistance warranty, which most current lines do for a limited term, often 10 to 25 years and usually not the full life of the shingle. Black streaking on an older roof is almost never covered.
Which brand has the best warranty?
At the top tier they are close enough that it should not drive your decision. The more useful question is which enhanced tier your contractor can actually register, since that is a bigger difference than anything between the three brands. We compare the shingles themselves in our brand comparison for Minnesota hail.
Want the Warranty Spelled Out Before You Sign?
Every estimate I write names the exact warranty tier, the credential behind it, and what it does not cover. If a competitor's bid says only "lifetime warranty," send it over and I will read it with you.
